arr. Picarband
“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” is a famous lullaby, in Italian it is known as “Brilla, scintilla, stella d’or“ (as far as I remember) and in other more recent versions.
Her words are taken from a 19th century poem by Jane Taylor entitled The Star. It was first published in 1806 and this text is sung to the French melody of the song – Ah! Vous dirai-je, maman – which was published in 1761 and subsequently arranged by several composers including Mozart in his Twelve Variations in C major.
It is the story of a distant star that tries to spread its light, a wish comes to be fulfilled, the star is activated and begins to shine, bringing joy and happiness.
It is a proactive piece, to be included in the Christmas atmosphere, which will allow band groups to cheer up the holidays with new, modern, easy and functional musical proposals.
This simple French motif lends itself to being arranged in both the melodic and rhythmic parts, in fact its descending repetition lends itself to being varied, encouraging pleasant dialogues between the instrumental sections.
The band instrumentation highlights the timbral aspects of the reeds and brass, with repetitions and clarifications of the melody, through easy syncopated formulas that allow a certain executive modernity, almost improvisational.
To favor a good performance, the performance of the supporting bass must be taken care of in its diversified phrasing aspects, with the consequent search for the right harmonic balance between the parts, all supported by the rhythmic performance of the various percussions which can also accompany as desired, with the capabilities available in the performers.
Respect for dynamics and modulations offer a certain interpretative variety, in a pleasant and expressive way. The final part is a progressive slowing down in dynamics: some thematic repetitions can be heard in the various instrumental sections, with interesting modulating passages.
We arrive calmly at the final “getting lost”: in the distance a suspended sound is prepared, with a particular chord from the entire band.
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star – Brilla, brilla, stella d’or… to create a proactive performance, aimed at realizing the serenity of a Christmas in Music.
