a suite in 3 movements based on themes taken from Paganini’s Capricci
Arie da Paganini is a suite in three movements based on themes taken from the famous 24 Capricci Op. 1 for solo violin by Niccolò Paganini (1782 – 1840).
This work is not a collection of Paganini pieces arranged for band, but constitutes an original work of elaboration, since the melodic material of the Capricci has been selected, enriched and developed into broader forms. The first movement, based on the Caprices No. 11 in C major and No. 14 in Eb major, consists of a march preceded by a short introduction.
The second movement, in tripartite form, is elaborated by the Capricci No. 20 in D major and No. 22 in F major, whose melodies are sometimes counterpointed with each other.
The third movement is a rondo taken from the Caprices No. 8 in Eb major and No. 9 in E major, which concludes with the reprise of the opening march theme.
The work is intended for medium-level concert bands (the degree of difficulty is 3.5).
There are numerous guides and substitutions on the score, to allow performance even for bands without a full band. For this reason, instruments with the optional indication are not essential and could be omitted.
The overall duration of the suite is approximately ten minutes.
